DFG-approved installations that pass building control
Convert bathroom to wheelchair-accessible wet room. Floor lowered to create level threshold (no step). Tanked waterproofing system, non-slip tiles, wall-mounted WC, grab rails. Takes 5-7 days. Cost £6,000-9,000 (DFG covers up to £30k). Requires Building Regs approval. OT specifies grab rail positions based on individual needs.
Permanent ramps: 1:12 gradient max (1m rise needs 12m ramp). Modular aluminium or treated timber construction. Handrails both sides if over 2m. Takes 2-3 days. £2,000-5,000 depending on height. Portable ramps available same-day. Planning permission needed if front garden ramp visible from street.
Straight stairlifts: £2,000-3,500, fitted in 2-4 hours. Curved stairlifts: £6,000-12,000, custom-made, 6-8 weeks lead time. Swivel seat, seatbelt, fold-away arms. Annual service required. DFG funding available if OT recommends. Battery backup works during power cuts. Weight limit typically 25 stone.
Alternative to stairlift when wheelchair user can't transfer. Shaft cut through floor/ceiling. Lift platform 900x1200mm (wheelchair size). Takes 5-7 days to install. Cost £15,000-25,000. Requires structural engineer's calcs and Building Regs approval. DFG funding covers this. Platform rated 250kg.
Standard door 762mm, wheelchair needs 850mm clear opening. We remove frame, widen opening, install wider door, make good. Takes 1 day per door. £800-1,200 each. Level thresholds fitted (no trip hazard). May need steel lintel if removing structure. Building control approval for structural changes.
Ground-floor extension or room conversion when stairs impossible. Typical 4x4m extension with bedroom + ensuite. Takes 6-10 weeks. Cost £25,000-45,000 (DFG £30k max, you pay difference). Includes foundations, tanking, electrics, heating. Planning permission + Building Regs required. OT specifies layout.
